best thing to do is google it.

I self taught myself the hiragana and katakana alphabet from buying books at Borders and Barnes n Noble. That would be a really good place to start. Your basically learning the alphabet which will later on help you with learning kanji and grammatical structures etc.

There are five diffrent ways to write in Japanese
Kanji – Chinese characters (Japanese use approxamently 2,000)
Romaji – (Roman Alphabet) uses American alphabet for Japanes words [ie: kuroi] (see on street signs)
Hiragana – Japanese alphabet (best to start out with)
Katakana – words that are not Japanese desent (european names [ie:mine name is Crissy so it would be Kurishii; or Ketchup is katchuppu
