There are five diffrent ways to write in Japanese
Kanji - Chinese characters (Japanese use approxamently 2,000)
Romaji - (Roman Alphabet) uses American alphabet for Japanes words [ie: kuroi] (see on street signs)
Hiragana - Japanese alphabet (best to start out with)
Katakana - words that are not Japanese desent (european names [ie:mine name is Crissy so it would be Kurishii; or Ketchup is katchuppu

This site is a good collection of links to websites offering learning Japanese for free. At the site you can find many things about learning Japanese: lessons about Hiragana and Katakana, Japanese Kanji, grammar lessons, vocabulary and useful expressions.

best thing to do is google it.

I self taught myself the hiragana and katakana alphabet from buying books at Borders and Barnes n Noble. That would be a really good place to start. Your basically learning the alphabet which will later on help you with learning kanji and grammatical structures etc.
